City of Goliad
  Welcome to Goliad, Texas

Goliad is the third oldest municipality and is rich in Texas history. It is the County Seat of Goliad County, one of the oldest counties of Texas. First named Santa Dorotea by the Spaniards in the 16th century, its name was changed February 4, 1829 to Goliad. The name is an anagram derived from the last name of a Spanish missionary priest, Father Hidalgo.

Following the Texas Revolution of 1836, General Sam Houston, then the Governor of the Republic of Texas, granted four leagues of land to Goliad on October 25, 1844. Goliad is the smallest town in Texas to be selected for the Main Street Program in 1984 and the Courthouse Square Historic District is one of the most complete examples of early Texas Settlements.

Goliad Sparkles Chipping Service and City Clean Up: The City has scheduled its next “Goliad Sparkles” campaign to begin Monday, July 26, 2010. Please note that the City has modified some of its policies regarding chipping service. The City provides chipping to individual property owners who conduct a cleanup and place a reasonable amount of debris for chipping and removal no earlier than six (6) days prior to a scheduled campaign start. The City will no longer provide chipping services to clean up after a contractor has been used to clear or clean a lot. The City cannot chip overly large piles with larger than average limbs. Please stop by City Hall to complete an application for the service by Friday, July 23, 2010 to be included in the July Goliad Sparkles Chipping Service campaign.
